Canada Goose Branta canadensis

All The Birds Of North America: Canada Goose Branta canadensis

Canada Goose Branta canadensis The Canada Goose is often heard before it is seen; in migration, long, wavy, V-shaped flocks give their musical honk from far overhead. In fall, these birds often descend on harvested fields, where they glean food from among the stubbly remains of the crop. The Canada Goose has a strong allegiance to its breeding grounds and returns year after year to nest in the same place; thus several different races have developed, differing chiefly in size.

Canada Goose Branta canadensis Identification Large races 32-48"; small races 22-27". Brownish-gray body and wings with long black neck and black head; distinctive white cheek patch usually extends under throat. Belly and flanks white. Bill and legs black.

Canada Goose Branta canadensis Voice Larger races give a resounding onh-whonk; smaller races cackle a high ahnk.

Canada Goose Branta canadensis Habitat Lakes, rivers, marshes, bays, cornfields, and grasslands.

Canada Goose Branta canadensis Range Breeds from N. Alaska to Baffin Island, south to NE. California, Missouri, and Ohio. Winters from southern part of breeding range to Mexico and Gulf Coast.
